Rating: PG-13
Series/Sequel: Sequel to Mile-High
Pairing: Greg Maddux/Tom Glavine
Summary: Glavine comes by late one night.
Setting: After the 7/23 Braves/Reds game, which the Braves lost 5-4. Glavine
left the game after 7 1/3 innings, leaving the game with one out, a runner
on first, and a 3-0 lead. Mike Remlinger and Jose Cabrera relieved to
allow 5 runs to score. Chipper Jones grounded out to second in the bottom
of the ninth with two outs, runners on first and third, and a one-run
deficit.
A/N: This one's a bit different. A bit more angsty, I guess. I think it's because I saw Glavine's wife at this game applauding her husband and felt an unconcious need to invalidate that somehow. I know, I'm sick.
Greg Maddux was awakened at 3 am by his doorbell. Of course, there was only
one person it could be. Blinking sleepily, he shut off his alarm system
and answered the door, wearing nearly nothing. As he'd suspected, Tom
Glavine was standing there, shifting his weight from foot to
foot. "Couldn't sleep?"
A nod, and Maddux stepped aside to admit him, locking the door and recoding
the alarm. "You shouldn't take those games so hard. It's not your fault.
You pitched and played beautifully. You can't even blame Remmy or Jose,
really, everyone has bad games."
"It's not just the game, Greg."
Maddux stopped his lecture. "What, then?" he asked, resting his hands on
Glavine's hips, the lefty's head drooping to his shoulder.
"She asked me if I was having an affair."
Maddux's jaw dropped. "Holy shit. What did you tell her?"
"That I'd never sleep with any woman but her. She asked me to leave for the
night. Can you verify that I wasn't at some bimbo's?" he asked, raising
his head again.
"Of course," Maddux replied, before kissing him long and deep. "But whatever
you say, Tommy, it was a beautiful game." He gently led Glavine towards
the bedroom. "The squeeze was perfect. I love watching you work." Another
kiss.
Maddux let him sit once they reached the bedroom, studying him. "I seem to be
at a distinct disadvantage," he remarked, sliding Glavine's t-shirt over
his head.
"I don't see what's so disadvantageous about it." Maddux grinned at him.
But then, Glavine sighed and Maddux's hands stilled. "Are you all right?"
"We seem to be breaking the not-at-home rule a lot more often lately."
Maddux moved from his position to sit on the bed beside him. "I know. But,
God - I can't watch you pitch without wanting you. And from the incident
last night neither can you. But if you hadn't been thrown out of your
house for the evening, would we be doing this? No. So it's not like our
self-control is shot. Besides, if my family hadn't been held up a couple
more days, would you have come over here?"
"Probably not."
"Ok, then. If this continues to be my incentive for pitching well, I won't
lose another game all season."
That elicited a smile at least. "Continue, then."
Maddux adopted a confused look. "Continue what?" he asked innocently.
Laughing, Glavine pushed him backwards and followed, rolling on his side to
look over Maddux. "God, I wish I didn't love you. This would be so much
easier if I didn't love you so goddamned much."
Maddux's response was to pull the lefty's body against his own for a deep
kiss. "I know," he said, simply. "I know."
They didn't talk about it the rest of the night, switching instead to baseball
conversation, once the opportunity for conversation arose again. "So the
notorious rookie-phobic manager is forced to play two in the middle of the
infield. You think he'll re-demote Giles when Veras comes off the DL?"
Maddux shrugged, though one arm was threaded across Tom'es shoulders, his
fingers trailing through Glavine's hair. "I like the kid. He's got good
range at second, and his bat's hot. He hustles. He's a player."
"No wonder you like him, then. You've always had a thing for 'players'."
Maddux turned his face toward Glavine's, despite the fact that they were more
or less intertwined. "Yeah. No wonder.
