Robert YOUNG Killed in Accident
A Dimondale area youth was killed and three other persons were injured seriously last week Wednesday
night when two cars collided nearly headon at M-99 and Holt Road.
Killed was Robert Young, 18, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas YOUNG of R.1, Dimondale. He was a junior in Eastern
High School in Lansing.
He was a passenger in a car driven by Merritt Gillilland Jr. 21, of R. 3, Eaton Rapids. Gillilland suffered
a possible cuts in the head and left knee. He was listed in poor condition at Lansing General Hospital.
A second passenger, Ross Tooker, 20, of R. 3, Eaton Rapids, was reported in serious condition at Sparrow
Hospital where he was treated for head injuries.
The driver of the second car LeRoy G. McIntyre, 69, of 727 N. Waverly Road, Lansing, suffered head cuts and
possible internal injuries. He was reported in good condition at Lansing General Hospital.
Gillilland was driving north on M-99 and McIntyre was southbound. The two cars collided as McIntyre started
to make a left turn onto Holt Road, reported Sheriff Elwinn Smith of Eaton County.
Coroner M. Douglas Burkhead of Charlotte said Young died from a skull fracture and internal injuries.
The accident, which occurred about 7 p.m., was Eaton County's 14th traffic fatality of 1964.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Estes-Leadley Colonial Chapel. Burial was in Evergreen
cemetery.
