Mt. Pleasant Boy Drowns In Chippewa
MT. PLEASANT-An eight-year-old Mt. Pleasant boy fell off the dam across the Chippewa River Sunday evening
and drowned while his deaf-mute mother watched in horror.
Mt. Pleasant City Police said Daniel B. STRONG was walking with his mother, Mr. Gloria MERRILL of 106 Elm,
about 7:30 p.m. when he slipped into the river.
CITY POLICE Sgt. Larry Kniffen pulled the child from the water. Attempts by both Sgt. Kniffen and the
fire department rescue unit to revive the boy failed. He was pronounced dead on arrival at Central Michigan Community
Hospital.
The mother told officers she could not swim. Witnesses summoned police. The accident occurred near the
downtown section of the city.
Arrangements will be announced by the Stinson Funeral Home.
