SMITH, Harold R.

Lansing

Age 89, passed away July 26, 1991 at his residence. Mr. Smith was born in Linden, MI on May 24, 1902 and has been a resident of Lansing since 1950. He graduated from Linden High School in 1920 and received his Life Certificate for teaching in 1924 from Central Michigan, his B.A. in 1932 from C.M.U. and his M.A. degree in Administration in 1946 from Michigan State College. He also received an honorary Doctor of Sociology from I.M.U. in 1960. Reaching over a million kids, taught for 50 years, starting in a rural school in Genesee County. He then taught at Arthur Hill Trade School in Saginaw. He was a coach, teacher and principal at Kinsley High School, Webberville High School and Okemos High School. Starting in 1950, he served the state for 19 years as Deputy Superintendent and Director of Education at Boys Training School in Lansing. He retired at age 65 in 1967 but continued substitution for 6 more years. He attended Pilgrim Congregational Church and was a life member of the Linden Masonic Lodge. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Louise; daughter Judy (Ed) CROOK of Charlevoix; son, Harold RAYMOND of Farmington Hills; daughter, Janet (Mike) McMULLEN of Perry; 8 grandchildren, William and Steven CROOK, Harold RAYMOND, Jr., Jennifer and Elizabeth SMITH, Tracy, Michelle and Jessica McMULLEN; 1 sister, Helen WARNER of Flint; and several nieces and nephews. 2 brothers, Russell and Warren and 1 daughter-in-law, Elizabeth preceded in death. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Tiffany Funeral Home where the family will receive friends Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.
