Safety Advocate Killed

Dimondale - Stanley V. MEAD, 44, owner of a Lansing insurance agency that specialized in policies for motorcyclists and who had long been a promoter of motorcycle safety, was killed here Thursday evening when his motorcycle collided with a car.
Mead, a resident of 4420 Stillwell, was known to lecture young motorcycle drivers and one of the persons who stopped at the scene of the car-motorcycle fatality on M-99, said, "That is the man who sold me motorcycle insurance the other day. He warned me to be careful of motorcycles, they can be dangerous."
He was a member of the Michigan Conservation Cycle Club and was a booster for cyclists to get off the highways and travel over trails. He rode a trail bike and Thursday evening with a neighbor, Richard Frieling of 4414 Stillwell, went out to look at a motorcycle that was for sale.
Frieling told Eaton County sheriff's officers that he was about 50 feet behind Mead when a car coming from the opposite direction made a left turn in front of Mead.
Thomas Murray, Eaton County coroner from Grand Ledge, said Mead was killed instantly.
The car driver, identified by deputies as Mrs. Nancy Jeglum, 22, of 921 Chicago, Lansing, was admitted to Lansing Medical Hospital. Her daughter, Paula, 4, was treated and released.
Mr. Mead had been a lifelong resident of DeWitt and Lansing and he owned and operated the Stanley V. Mead Insurance Agency on Pleasant Grove and was a member of the Michigan Association of Mutual Agents. A graduate of MSU, he was a member of the MSU Alumni Association of Ingham County.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army and was a member of Lansing Eagles.
Surviving are his wife, Donna J.; three daughters, Susan Denise, Nancy Jean and Patricia Ann, all at home; two sons, Kenneth Ronald of Lansing and Mark Alan at home; his mother, Mrs. Merreta MEAD of Lansing and a brother, Virgil of DeWitt.
