Harry "Hap" HOWE


  Harry "Hap" Howe age 92, life resident of Eaton Rapids, died Sunday, April 21, 1991. Born in Aurelius Township on June 8, 1898 son of James and Ada (HENRY) HOWE. After his education he worked with his father and at Schwied Garage, joined the Army in 1918, during World War I, served over seas in the Motor Con in France and Germany. After returning from the service he worked for A.M. Smith Egg Company from 1922 to 1924 then worked for Hugh Lyons until he became a self-employed Mason Contractor and retired from the V.F.W. National Home in charge of the Bus Garage. He married Letha PIERCE in 1924 and she preceded him in death in 1952. They had no children but raised two boys, Bill YOUNG and Bob LAYMAN. In 1962 he married Joyce HOFFMAN GALL. Hap was the Fire Chief at the V.F.W. National Home form 1952 to 1964, Past Commander of the V.F.W. Post #2406 in Charlotte.
  Surviving is his wife Joyce; two sons, Harold William and Fay HOWE of Wayland and Richard Lloyd and Sylvia HOWE of Olivet; two foster sons, Bill and Mary YOUNG of Florida and Bob LAYMAN; four grandchildren; a sister, Margaret PORTER of Eaton Rapids and a sister-in-law, Esther HOWE of Eaton Rapids; and several nieces and nephews and a special niece, Lucille CLUTTER.
  Funeral services will be Wednesday, April 24 at 1:00 p.m. from the Skinner Funeral Home with Rev. Paul Mergener officiating. Interment will be in the Rosehill Cemetery with full Military graveside services conducted by the Charlotte V.F.W. Post #2406 acting Commander George Howe. Casket bearers will be George Howe, William Howe, Michael Howe, Douglas Howe, Walter Howe, Michael Dunn and Barry McKessy. Visitation will be Tuesday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. For those desiring, a memorial contribution may be made to either the Charlotte V.F.W. Post #2406 or the Eaton Rapids Community Hospital. Envelopes available at the funeral home.

He was a veteran of World War I; a past commander of the Eaton Rapids V.F.W. Post #1283; and past member of Charlotte VFW Post #2406. He was preceded in death by his fist wife, Letha PIERCE in 1952. Surviving is his wife of 29 years, Joyce; 2 sons, Harold William and Fay HOWE of Wayland and Richard Lloyd and Sylvia HOWE of Olivet; 2 foster sons, Bill and Mary YOUNG of Florida and Bob LAYMAN; 4 grandchildren; sister, Margaret PORTER of Eaton Rapids; sister-in-law, Esther HOWE of Eaton Rapids; several nieces and nephews and a special niece, Lucille CLUTTER.
