'Bit of Dimondale gone'

DIMONDALE - A little of Dimondale died Tuesday along with R. Clinton (Clint) Hines.
The village's congenial grocer, down-to-earth fire chief, willing do-gooder and inveterate pipe-smoker,
suffered a heart attack about midnight Monday and died six hours later in Lansing General Hospital, despite the best
efforts of his own department's ambulance crew and paramedics from the Lansing Fire Department who met the Dimondale
ambulance on its run to the hospital.
HINES WAS a Dimondale institution. He had been in the little country grocery since his father,
the late A.D. HINES, opened the business in 1928.
Clint took over the business in the depths of the depression (1936) and ran it, with the help of mostly
family members, until closing time Monday. He liked doing things the old-fashioned way and until just recently wrapped
his meat in pink paper and tied it with string from a cone hanging from the ceiling.
Hines was a Dimondale fireman for 41 of his 59 years, and served as the department's chief for the last 12.
AS IS the case in many old village stores, there often was much talk as business in the Hines
Market. Folks his store as a place to catch up on local happenings.
On special occasions, such as just before Christmas and Halloween, Hines-inspired festivities for the
local children often took place. he also contributed gratiously to food baskets for the needy at Christmas and
Thanksgiving.
Hines lived all his life in and around Dimondale. He was born in Windsor Township on Christmas Eve, 1917.
FUNERAL SERVICES will be held from the Berl Field Funeral Home here at 2 p.m. Friday. The
Dimondale Lions Club has established a Clinton Hines Memorial Fund to which contributions may be made at the Dimondale
Hardware.
