Mrs. HALSEY Dies at 89
Area Pioneer Had Lived All but Three Months at S. Logan, Holmes Rd.
Mrs. Dollie Church Halsey, 89, daughter of one of Lansing's pioneer families, died Tuesday at the home of her
son, Sheldon, in Berkley.
Mrs. Halsey moved to Berkley three months ago from her home in which she lived all her life at the corner of
S. Logan st. and Holmes rd.
The stately home 3300 S. Logan st. was built 75 years ago by Mrs. Halsey's parents, Stephen H. WHITMORE and
Amanda HILLIARD, pioneer settlers. Mrs. Halsey was born in a small frame house that once stood to the west of the present
home.
Her father acquired 200 acres lying between Washington ave. and Pleasant Grove rd. when he came to Michigan
more than 100 years ago.
The family live in Delhi township for a short time before moving to the S. Logan st. site.
Mrs. Halsey's mother had settled in Delhi 110 years ago. Her father sold a right-of-way through his farm for
Logan st. and one for the New York Central railroad.
Mrs. Halsey was honored in 1952 by the Arbutus chapter of the Order of Eastern Star when they presented her
with a gold certificate, symbolic of 50 years of membership.
Also surviving are four grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at the Mt. Hope cemetery at 2 p.m. Thursday. The body will remain at the
McCabe funeral home, 18570 Grand River ave., Detroit, until 10 a.m. Thursday.
