Lansing State Journal
The Lansing School District lost one of its most experienced teachers and active
union members when Mary Alice Dunn died Tuesday. She was 60.
"Her whole life was dedicated to teaching and to her kids," said Jan Holbomb, a
fifth-grade teacher at North Elementary School. "She had a room all ready to go this year. It's
a big loss."
Dunn had just started her 38th year in education and was the third most senior
teacher in the district, said Harry Moore, president of the Lansing teachers union.
Dunn taught at Harley Franks Elementary School.
Moore said he will especially miss Dunn's expertise at the bargaining table, where
she was a longtime veteran and vice president of the union.
"She was my right arm at the bargaining table when it came to elementary
education," he said.
Friends and colleagues described her as kind, determined and efficient.
:"She had a calming effect-she was very low key," Holcomb said. "She was not as
aggressive and outspoken as some, but was very effective in the way she handled things.'
The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. today at
the Pray Funeral Home, 401 W. Seminary St., Charlotte. A memorial service to celebrate her life
will be held at 4 p.m. Friday at Grace United Methodist Church, 1900 Boston Blvd., Lansing.
Memorials may be made to the Mary Dunn Scholarship Fund.
