North Lansing Business Man, Ex-Alderman, Taken by Death

  E. Clare DUNHAM, 51, former fourth ward alderman, member of the business firm of the Dunham Hardware and Implement company, 1216 Turner street, and past president of the North Side Commercial club, died at 10 o'clock Tuesday morning where he had undergone an operation Saturday.
Mr. Dunham's unexpected death came as a shock to many Lansing business men and officials of the city government. Mr. Dunham, who was born in Lansing, had lived here all his life with the exception of a few years spent on his father's farm near Gunnisonville when a boy.
Since the practical retirement of his father, Paul E. DUNHAM, from the Dunham firm, Mr. Dunham had managed the business on Turner street. The was one of the few business organizations in Michigan in which father, son, and grandson were actively represented.

Business Career Varied

Mr. Dunham, whose home is at 323 North Capitol avenue, received his education in the public schools of Lansing. Before entering business with his father he had traveled Michigan as representative of a wholesaling and manufacturing company.
After entering business with his father, Mr. Dunham, previous to 1929, built a number of houses in Lansing and bought and sold properties. Mr. Dunham was elected alderman of the fourth ward where he had lived for many years. He was active as his father had been before him, in city and county politics and was for many years a member of the Republican county organization.
He had served the North Side Commercial club as president and as a director and was always active in this organization's community programs and objectives. Mr. Dunham had also served for many years as an officer of old Franklin council, Royal Arcanum. He was an affiliate of the DeWitt lodge of Masons for nearly 30 years.
Mr. Dunham's body was removed to the Palmer and O'Donnell funeral home. Funeral arrangements were being made Tuesday.
Besides the widow, Mrs. Goldie F. DUNHAM, he leaves a son, Brayton L. DUNHAM, associated with his father and grandfather in the Dunham company, and three daughters, Mrs. Alice HENSHAW, Lansing, and the Misses Marjorie and Jane DUNHAM who live at home, his father Paul E. DUNHAM, and three aunts, Mrs. A.M. DARLING, Mrs. Milton SMITH and Mrs. Wilbur WALKER, all residents of Lansing.
