Fumes Kill Boy in Car
Child, 4, Found Overcome As Car is Halted at Holt; Others are 'Sleepy'

Carbon monoxide fumes from a faulty muffler, circulating through the car in which he was riding with other members of his family, were blamed for the death Saturday morning of Roger Eugene DENBY, 4, son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald DENBY of Chicago.
The family en route to Lansing to visit Mr. Denby's parents, Mr. and Mrs. John DENBY, 4022 South Cedar street, became drowsy toward the end of their overnight trip and stopped for (cannot read) tourist cabin in Holt. Young Roger, found to be overcome, died a few minutes later at about 6 a.m. Windows of the vehicle had been completely closed at a point near Charlotte.
Also riding in the car, along with the parents, were two sons, Jack and Donald, jr. and a daughter, Hazel Mae, none of whom appeared to have suffered lasting ill effects from the gas.
Had Weak Heart
Coroner Ray Gorsline, who investigated, said that young Roger apparently was the first to succumb because he had been afflicted with a weak heart. Another child, Mary Ellen, the Denby's youngest, was left in Chicago.
The body was removed to the Gorsline-Runciman funeral home pending funeral arrangements.
