EXTREME CHAMPIONSHIP WRESTLING TV
October 11, 1996
Blue Meanie and Stevie Richards came out dressed as Public Enemy, complete with their entrance music. They were Flyboy Stevie Rock and Meanie Grunge, and the fans just ate their impersonations up. Meanie Grunge joked about being sober, and Stevie Rock commented that he just could not be Meanie Grunge because he wasn’t nearly as fat as Johnny Grunge. After a couple hilarious minutes (and this was a classic segment worth tracking down on tape), they suddenly became serious and called out the Gangstas for their title match.
1. ECW Tag Team Title: Gangstas (New Jack & Mustafa) (c) vs Stevie Richards & Blue Meanie
Richards scored early with a Steviekick on Mustafa and he and Meanie actually got the better of their opponents for a time. Mustafa fought back with a powerslam on Meanie. About one minute into the match the Eliminators ran into the ring and attacked the Gangstas. They gave Mustafa a total elimination and gave one to the ref as well as Meanie and Jack. A complete throwaway match, but a very entertaining opening segment. NR
Joey Styles recapped the Raven-Tommy Dreamer/Sandman feud, including airing a few clips, and then said that Raven took a leave of absence. Therefore, Richards would have to take his place in the Ultimate Jeopardy match later in the show, and thus defend Raven’s ECW title.
2. Mikey Whipwreck vs J.T. Smith (w/Little Guido, Sal Bellomo, Devon Storm & Bad Crew)
Mikey was attacked by Crew and Storm early. Whipwreck countered a suplex attempt and flipped Smith over. Mikey scored with a hiptoss, dropkick, armdrag and armbar. Whipwreck gave Smith a lucha style float-over armdrag. Smith fought back. Storm and Guido tripped Mikey, so Mikey took them out with a tope. Smith went for a baseball slide kick but Mikey moved and Smith hit Storm and Guido instead. Smith got into a shoving match with them, and Mikey then took them out with a plancha. Smith won an exchange of forearms and slammed Mikey. Smith hit a “Sicilian splash” for a near fall. Smith grabbed a chair but yelled at the fans and Mikey knocked the chair into Smith’s face with a baseball slide kick. Mikey then hit a tope into a huracanrana on Smith on the floor for a pop. Mikey gave Smith a slingshot neck snap and then launched off a hunched-over Smith with a running tope onto Smith’s cronies at ringside. However, everyone then attacked Mikey and Smith gained a one-finger near fall. Smith went for a running lariat in the corner but ran into a boot and Mikey gave him a tornado DDT. Bad Crew attacked Mikey as the ref was distracted. They whipped Mikey into the ropes, but in the process Smith lost his footing and got crotched on the top rope. Mikey then gave Crew a double cross bodyblock. Mikey also backdropped Guido and superkicked Storm, who fell into the ropes and Smith got crotched on the top rope again. Mikey then gave Smith a top rope huracanrana for the pin at 7:48. I suppose this was not a great match in some respects, but this was one of the most entertaining matches I can remember from ECW. Mikey worked his butt off and was vintage Mikey with all the dives and highspots. The interference was excessive, but in a good way as it made for so many comedic moments, many of which contained an element of athleticism. One of the better examples of mixing comedy with athleticism. ***
3. Ultimate Jeopardy Match: Sandman & Tommy Dreamer (w/Beulah) vs Stevie Richards & Brian Lee (w/Meanie, Nova & Lori Fullington)
The gimmick was that a stipulation was tied to each person should they lose the match. If Lee lost, his head would be shaved. If Richards lost, he would lose the ECW title to whoever pinned him. If Dreamer lost, he would lose Beulah to whoever beat him. If Sandman lost, he would be caned 10 times. Lee backdropped Dreamer but Beulah grabbed his leg and Dreamer gave Lee a cactus clothesline to the floor. Dreamer whipped Lee into the barricade twice. Richards intervened but Sandman dove onto him. Dreamer hit Lee with a chair and again whipped him into the barricade. Lee fought back and whipped Dreamer into the barricade. Richards rammed Dreamer into a able but Sandman clotheslined him. Dreamer whipped Richards into Lee and the barricade and hit Richards with a chair. Lee threw Dreamer into the crowd and hit him with a chair. Sandman suplexed a table onto Richards for a pop. Richards got the better of Sandman as Lee and Dreamer fought towards the entrance of the building. Richards hit Sandman with a chair. Sandman fought back against Richards in the ring as Lee dominated Dreamer in the crowd. Sandman gave Richards a lariat and some chops . Sandman missed a lariat in the corner and Meanie gave him a corner splash. Richards gave Sandman a Steviekick for a near fall. Sandman threw Richards out of the ring and Lee took his fight with Dreamer back into the ring. Lee powerslammed Dreamer and placed a chair on his face. Lee then legdropped Dreamer for a near fall. Lee went after Beulah and headbutted her. Dreamer rolled up Lee for a near fall. Dreamer countered a prime time slam and DDTd Lee for a near fall when Lori intervened. Lee gained a near fall on Dreamer and took the fight out of the ring. Richards hit Sandman with a chair. Lee threw Dreamer off the top of the bleachers through a table. Richards hit Sandman with a chair for a near fall and went for a piledriver but Sandman countered with a backdrop. Dreamer fought back as he and Lee fought in the men’s room. Sandman elbowsmashed Richards through a table at ringside as Dreamer hit Lee with a chair in a stall. Lee fought back as they returned to ringside. Lee then rammed Dreamer into the wall near the entrance as Sandman hit a slingshot somersault legdrop on Richards for a near fall. Lee repeatedly rammed Dreamer into a vending machine. Sandman gave Richards a slingshot splash for a near fall. Meanie and Nova stacked three tables as Lee hit Dreamer with a chair in the “eagle’s nest”. Lee then chokeslammed Dreamer off the balcony through three tables (although 4 were stacked, one didn’t break). Dreamer was a bloody mess by that point. Richards rolled up Sandman for a near fall. Sandman ripped Lori’s dress off, not revealing anything shocking though. Richards Steviekicked Sandman for a near fall. Lori caned Sandman but Sandman went to DDT her, although Richards gave him another Steviekick for a near fall. Richards missed a cane shot, Sandman DDTd him and pinned him at 14:25 to win the title. Athletically speaking this match had its moments but wasn’t great. However, the action was wild and chaotic for the most part, and the brawling was stiff enough to carry the match. Fans popped huge at the end. Really good match overall and a good finish to a hot show. ***1/4
