Where to start?   Lets start with the things that are the most obvious, rubs.   They can come in all sizes.   Usually the larger the tree the larger the buck.   Oh yea, only bucks make rubs.   They make rubs for a couple of different resons.   First, they use them early in the season to help remove the velvet from their antlers.   Second, they have scent glands at the base of the antlers to say "hey this is my area and I'm bad".   I am not trying to say that only little rubs are made by little bucks.
If a large buck is mad enough he will take out his frustration on just about any size tree.   If you find a bunch on rubs in one area it is probably either close to his bedding area or it is what they call a rub line. A rub line is generally several trees in a line (example.. following a ridge) that have been rubbed on by a buck as he travels looking for ladies.   They are usually rubbed on the same side of the tree.   This helps you know in general which way the buck is traveling.   This is a very good place to start hunting.
