New York, April 98. Coffe n' cigarettes on 4th St. Nightlife ain't my life but when you're in the city that never sleeps you make an exception. Across town in Central Park, one time Dolls producaer Todd Rungdren is rewarded for paying his rock n ' roll dues, supporting Cheap Trick at a VH1 sponsored wankfest that has little or nothing to do with Rock n' Roll.Elsewhere , Eric Clapton sings for a supper club audience and serves them noodles. The Spice Girls ahve sold out Madison Square Garden in twelve minutes which seems to mean something when enshrined in a New York Times headline.
Despite being a shadow of its sleazy self, New York still plays host and hostess to nights such as Trannie Chaser at the Nowbar on Seventh Avenue; hosted by one Gloria Wholesome (Ne' Whole). You could check out The Toilet Boys at the Don Hills Bar where Jayne County DJs.
In a parallel universe the billboards would be advertising sold out Dolls shows, if they handn't taken a swan dive to the street 20 years ago. Tonight, the hottest ticket in town is for a cabaret artist called Buster Poindexter, playing songs and doing gags for an audience of balding baby boomers. I get my cheeks down to the Bottom Line Club because once upon a time, Buster Poindexter used to be David Johansen - the feral voiced, foetal Jagger-a-like singer in everyone's favourite fuckups The New York Dolls. |
