Too Soon

His eyes followed the single finger that traced her full lips leaving a faint pink tint in its tracks.  Her eyes locked on the mirror in front of her as not to get out of the creases on her lips.

Why are you staring at me? She asked without looking at him.

Just watching.  I had never watched you put on make-up before. He explained.

"Right. Ok all done. Lets go!

Lance hopped down from the counter and followed her out of the bathroom.

So what ever happened to that Jacob guy? Lance asked as he twisted a fry in his hand and waited for a response.

I dumped him, he was a loser. She explained.

Oh He said and looked up at her.  He had missed her so much.

So how was touring? You never told me. She said.

Same as it always is. Lance answered dully.

Whats wrong? I thought you loved touring. Lance smiled at her southern drawl which started to kick in at that moment.

I do. Its just you know how I always am when I come back. Lance sighed.

Do you remember when we first met? Lance asked with a smile.

Oh yeah! She laughed. 5 years old, I did that thing they teach you in kindergarten.

Yeah, you walked up to me and said, Hi, Im Kylie McCann.  Do you wanna be my friend? Lance said in a little girl with a thick southern drawl voice.

Yeah, and you were all like Sure, Im James Bass Kylie laughed.

And then I fell on my face in the sand and I cried and you laughed. Lance smiled.  Kylie just laughed harder.

Ill never forget that. Kylie smiled, Or the day you left to join *N SYNC. I dont think Ive ever cried so much in my life other than that time.

You cried?

Yeah, I thought I would never see you again.

You seem different Ky Lance said as they played pinball in his basement.  Kylie didnt say anything she just frowned.

Whats wrong? Lance asked.

N-nothing She said uneasily.

Really come on whats wrong? I can tell something is wrong. Lance said stubbornly.

It came back She said quietly.

What? But I thought they said it was gone for good.

Well I went last month for a check up and they said it came back. She said and a tear ran down her cheek.

Oh shit. Lance said under his breath.  Why was this happened? And to Kylie of all people.

Im scared She whispered.  Lance pulled her in for a tight hug.

Im so sorry Ky. He carefully stroked her silky hair.

I love you Lance She said softly into his chest.

What? He didnt know what to say he loved her since the age of 10, but never said anything in fear of losing her friendship.

I love you She repeated.

I Love you too He whispered.

Why does this have to happen now? Kylie cried into his chest

Lance walked through the tall grass.  He reached the slab of concrete on the ground which had Kylie Marie McCann July 31, 1979- January 20, 2003 inscribed on it.  The hard raindrops plopped on his shoulders pushing him down as he bent down to place flowers on in the slot.

I miss you Ky.  So does everyone else.  I wish you were here.  I just wanted to tell you I found someone but shell never even compare to you Are you watching me? I hope you are.  Ill always love you Kylie He said and got up.

He stepped out of the cemetery and onto the paved parking lot; he watched his feet, as he walked not looking where he was going.  He slammed into someone.

Im sorry They both said apologetically.  Lance looked at the girl he had walked into.

Kylie? He said just above a whisper.

Uh no My name is Mylie. She said emphasizing the M The girl smiled and walked away.

Thats weird Lance said to himself and got into his car.
