When Peny was 9 months old, she had a decent recall, and rarely left
our sight when in the yard with everyone there. I forgot however to
think about her love of chasing squirrels. We live on a rather quiet
street, lots of young kids that play in the street. A neighbor was going
to work driving the company panel truck (like UPS uses) He was running
late, he was just plain ol' speeden'... Peny did not whimper, whine, or
yelp... it was a SCREAM! I had to ask the gentleman to back the truck
off of Peny's foot. When I called the vet's regular number to get an
emergency number, no one turned on the answering machine, had to get the
number from the phone book. meanwhile a very kind women from across the
street came out with towels to wrap Peny's foot in. To jump back a bit
we had a great dog by the name of Jackie at the time, she was 10 years
old at the time.. back to where I was, We got Peny into my lap in the
back of our car, and had one very difficult time getting Jackie to get
out of the car ( she wanted to be with Peny). Amazingly I remembered to
apply direct pressure, keep her head below heart level, and pray (I was
an EMT for around 10 years) Peny was in shock, had MAJOR soft tissue
injuries, but no internal injuries besides her foot, not even a broken
toe!!! It took 9 months to get a full healing of the skin, She still has
an occasional skin breakdown, she has arthritis in that foot, and her
inside toe is deformed, with the nail growing sideways I later learned
that kindly neighbor was bitten by Jackie for getting to close to Peny.
When we got home to tell our daughter that her dog was going to be ok,
Jackie ran out in the road for the first time ever IN FRONT OF ANOTHER
TRUCK!!! He was going slow and stopped, I could have died! BTW when Peny
screamed, several people told me later that they at first thought a
child had been hit, Peny sounded like a hurt child...
One other affect of her accident took time to discover, Peny best we can figure hit her head during the accident, and as a result  has siezures, and posablely is brain damaged...
