Katie, Katie, how does your garden grow? On Saturday, Katie watches as Gramps does some of the heavy yardwork Mommy can't do anymore.
Katie decides to lend a hand. Here, Gramps, I'll help!
Katie gets up close to Gramps' work. Gramps was clearing out the dead hibiscus bushes and the oak sports. A "sport", by the way, is a plant that is growing somewhere it wasn't intentionally planted. In this case, a couple acorns started little oak trees and went undetected as long as the hibiscus were alive. Oh well, time to clear everything out!
No, no, Gramps, that one gets planted over there! Katie is now the supervisor. Gramps is planting firecracker plants where the old plants were removed.
Since we moved in in December 2001, this schefflera plant has grown to be taller than the house, as you can see from his photo. The men are gradually cutting it down, one trunk at a time.
The area previously "inhabited" by the hibiscus and oaks. Now it's been all cleared out. The grow boxes in the background are hosting my corn, tomatoes and gourds (and some newly sprouted carrots). Newly added in are the six firecracker plants, aka coral plants. Eventually, the latter will get between three and four feet tall and have lots of small, bright red and pink flowers.

Another of the grow boxes, this one by the porch (we have 4 set up in total), with corn, pumpkins, squash and melon plants. In the small pot at right are some strawberry plants; we have 3 tiny strawberries growing in them as of this picture.
The next day was Palm Sunday. Katie is all dressed up in a nice new sundress. Here she's playing with her Grammy (who has a broken shoulder, so sadly she can't pick Katie up). Katie looks like she's trying to determine - can I fit Ernie in my purse? Katie's plastic canvas purse was made by her Great Gram.
Katie is outstanding in her field. Gramps is carting away some more of the yard stuff. Yes, Gramps and Daddy worked more on the yard. Can you believe it?
