Should I only listen to Christian music?

I was listening to the radio yesterday (rare, but sometimes it happens between switching CDs) and I heard a Nine Inch Nails song, "Closer," that I've heard many times before. I really listened to the lyrics, and heard this:

I wanna f*ck you like an animal
I wanna feel you from the inside
I wanna f*ck you like an animal
My whole existance is flawed
You bring me closer to God

If Mr. Trent Reznor thinks that'll bring him closer to God, he is sadly mistaken!

Christian music is a way to fill your head and heart with more of God. I believe that God likes music, why else would we sing in church? The Bible even tells you to praise him in song:

"I will praise God's name in song and glorify him with thanksgiving."
Psalm 69:30

Before I was saved, I listened to a lot of angry music. I thought all Christian music was lame, whiny chick singers and boy bands. The thing is, I didn't know anything about it. I didn't even take the time to see that one of my favorite bands, MxPx, mentioned Christ in their songs. When you listen to music glorifying rape and violence, you're not glorifying God!

Whatever type of music you like, there is a Christian equivalent! Praise God for that! The first Christian band I really got into was the OC Supertones, since I was a big ska fan. I was very impressed, the band was great and the lyrics were about God. It was much more refreshing to hear lyrics about Him, than about drinking and anarchy all the time.

There are some very fine lines between what is Christian music, and what isn't. I think true Christian music has lyrics about Christ. Granted there are Christians that make music, but its not always about Christ. Use your discretion.

For example, much of classical music was written about God, but some was not. The music that wasn't isn't exactly degrading God, is it? This is what I mean about using discretion-- there is a huge grey area when it comes to music. I'm not going to make a blacklist of bands that aren't "Christian." There are too many factors and opinions that can be used to determine what is okay.

This is a very touchy subject, and one I spend a lot of time debating. What was presented above is my opinion, and may differ from your parents' or church's beliefs. Please consult a trusted figure before you run out and say, "The Punk Rawk Bible says I can listen to Eminem!" I am merely saying to screen what you listen to, and to pray about your choices. I would never want someone contriversial like Eminem to lose his right to free speech, because conflict creates though. It makes you question what your values are, and hopefully, they are God's values.

For the record, the Punk Rawk Bible does not endorse Eminem simply because we think his music isn't about much other than the glorification of violence and the excessiveness of the rap lifestyle. Again, that's our opinion!
