Son of Sam - Songs from the Earth

Take a hit of goth, an injection of metal and swallow down a pill of punk rock and you'll mellay into the world of Son of Sam. This project was formed a year ago following the tour of Samhain, Danzig and AFI. It features Todd Youth (Danzig) on guitar, Davey Havok (AFI) on vocals, London May (Samhain) on the tubs and Steve Zing (Samhain) on bass. Glenn Danzig also pops up as well playing guitar and keyboards on a few tracks.

Well, what can I say about the music? Recorded in only ten days, hence only ten tracks on the album. The scene is set immediately with the opening song Of Power. Dark lyrics and spooky melodies. The standouts are the fast and furious darkened melody of Stray. Evernight, where the vocals are churned out against the panic attack movement of the chorus. The title track Songs from the Earth sombers into an enigmatic slow moving melody. Purevil is a very spooky to say the least, probably the most listener-friendly of their punk-core evil tunes which are at times hard to digest. Songs where the graveyard organs take over weaken the album in a punk rock sense. Something that's hard to listen to at first but it's nothing you can't get over. But overall, Songs from the Earth is a good listen. (Matthew Matanovic)
