| Minor Threat Alright, I bet most people have heard of Minor Threat, since they are one of the most influential In hardcore bands ever. Minor Threat's lead singer Ian MacKaye started a term known as Straight Edge. He never intended to make a movement when starting Straight Edge, but eventually it turned into one. And for those of you who do not know what straight edge is....a lifestyle and subculture primarily centered in the United States where, intentionally, and in the face of actual opportunities, one does not: -Drink alcohol -Smoke tobacco -Use recreational drugs -Engage in promiscuous sex (although this is sometimes omitted) Basically Straight Edge originated with a small group of punk kids, including Ian McKaye, soon to be singer for the legendary Minor Threat, adopted the X on the hand as a symbol of their stand against alcohol and drugs and came up with the term straight edge. Anyways, Minor Threat formed in November of 1980. In september of 1981, when guitarist Lyle Preslar decided to go to the college the band split up. Ian and Jeff both began a new band, which split up when Minor Threat reformed in 1982. Minor Threat then broke up for good in 1983. |
