The Dead Boys, in my mind, were the greatest punk/rock band of their time (1975-1978).They played faster, louder and harder music than any other punk band of the 70's.But if you compared it too todays "punk" it's not all that
fast/hard/loud. But it's still pretty fukin amazing. Stiv Bators was originally in a band called Frankenstein, along with two other mebers of the Dead Boys. The members in Frankenstein quit the band because of a lack of local enthuasiasm for the scene.Shortly after the band began too fall apart the Ramones came to Cleveland and Stiv managed to get Joey Ramone to get them an audition at CBGBs.The four remaining members of Frankenstein ( Stiv, Johnny, Cheetah and Jimmy) went down to New York withotu a bass player for the audition. At that time they changed their named to teh Dead Boys, getting the name from tehir song "Down in Flames".The band played the show and the crown was quite enthuastic. They got good reviews from the few punk/rock zines in New York at the time. The owner of CBGBs decided to manage the Dead Boys, and wanted to record them on his own label, but didn't have enoguh money, so he sold them to Sire Records.Onstage Stiv displayed many antics resmblings those of Iggy Pop ( jumping and rolling around, cutting himself and bleeding everywhere, shoving his head inside the bass drum, and trying to get head from the groupies). In April of 1977 the Dead Boys opened for the Damned at CBGBs.This was a big moment in Punk history because the Dmned were the first Punk band from England to play in America. In October of 1977 they released their debut album " young loud and and snotty". Their second album was released in June of 1978, which was called " We cum for your children".Sire records soon dropped the Dead boys after Johnny Blitz was stupidely knifed in a fight with Spanish hoods. The
Dead
Boys broke up shortly after.
In June of 1990, Stiv Bators was hit by a car and died shortly after.
