| CACHE ** (2005) DIRECTOR: Michael Haneke CAST: Daniel Auteuil, Juliette Binoche THE PLOT: A married couple is terrorized by a series of videotapes planted on their front porch that may be the direct result from an event that occurred years ago. BEN'S VIEWS: Cache has been touted as a high-quality thriller in the style of a Hitchcock film. Comparing this to a Hitchcock film is a bit of an insult in my opinion. The film lacks the ability to captivate an audience the way a Hitchcock film could. In fact it is a pretty dull telling of a fairly interesting story. The plot of the film could be very involving but director Michael Haneke adds so much padding to the story that it becomes a chore to watch. There are some creepy moments but they are few and far between. The acting is decent but still not enough to draw us in. Worst of all is the ending. Sometimes it is good to leave a film open ended but this is pushing it. It is extremely frustrating considering the audience has waded through nearly two hours of build-up. The film contains one shocking moment over half way through the running time. I think the film would have been much better had it ended right then and there. Everything that comes after is unnecessary. You can attempt to watch this if you want considering that a majority of critics disagree with me. But I would bet on it that you'll come out with feelings of boredom and frustration. |
