                     Newcastle Brown Ale ScreenSaver
                                  v1.0
Installation Instructions

To install the screen saver, copy the file called BROONALE.SCR into
your windows system directory. The position of your windows directory
varies from machine to machine, but as a general rule, if you are
using Windows 3.1 or Windows '95, this directory will usually be:

C:\WINDOWS (assuming windows is on your C drive)

If you are using Windows NT, this directory will usually be:

     C:\WINNT35\SYSTEM32

For more information about your windows system directory or installing
screensavers, please refer to your Windows Instruction Manual.

Using the Newcastle Brown Ale screensaver

The screensaver is configurable in several ways. To change the
configuration, go to the screensaver selection window on your windows
system and press the `Settings' button. You will be presented with a
window that allows you to change the settings of the screensaver.
Below is an explanation of each option available, along with useful
advice that will help you to get the most from this screensaver.

Update Delay

This option allows you to specify the time delay (in milliseconds) between
each frame of animation of the screensaver. If you want the screensaver
to run at maximum speed, set this number to zero. If you want to slow down
the action, set this number higher.
TIP: You're as well keeping this number zero all the time.

Maximum Number of Balls

This option specifies the maximum number of balls that are allowed on
screen at any given time. This number must be the range of 1-30.
If you have a slow PC, having a large number of balls on the screen
may slow the screensaver down.
TIP: If the screensaver is slow, try reducing the maximum number of balls.

Friction

This option enables you change the amount of friction acting on the bottle
as it is knocked back and forth by the balls. Setting this number high
causes the bottle to slow down rapidly after being hit by a ball. Setting
this number low causes the bottle to decelerate slowly, simulating an
icy or slippery suface.
TIP: as a rule, high friction means the bottle will remain on the screen
for long periods of time before reaching the edge of the screen and smashing.
With low friction, the bottle gets smashed regularly.

Gravity

This option allows you to specify how strongly gravity pulls the balls to
the ground by specifying a number from 0 (low gravity) to 10 (high gravity).
TIP: try the screensaver with gravity set to zero!

Side of ball entry

With this option you can specify the likelihood that a new ball entering the
screen will come in on the left hand side. When this is 50 (percent), balls
are equally likely to come on the left or the right hand side. If you set
this value to 100, all new balls will enter from the left, and if you set
it to 0, all new balls will come from the right. Any value inbetween 0
and 100 can be specified.

User Defined Text Message

The user can specify a custom text message to scroll along the bottom of
the screen, in addition to the Newcastle Brown Ale banner.

Sound Effects

Tick this box to toggle sound effects on and off.

Full Screen Mode

Enabling this toggle box forces the screen-saver picture to fill the
entire screen reguardless of the current screen resolution. In higher
resolution modes (800x600 or 1028x766) graphics tend to appear smaller,
and this option enables you to specify that you want everything scaled
up to full screen size.
TIP: On high resolution modes with 24 bit colour, having the
screen-saver on full screen mode will slow things down on machines
that are not quite fast (by fast we mean something like a Pentium90).
If the screensaver is running somewhat slow, try switching this option off.

Randomiser

This toggle box allows you to switch on the randomiser feature, which
randomises some of the above options every time a new wave of balls enters
the screen in the screensaver. The randomiser affects the number of balls,
gravity, and the side of ball entry paramater.

Specification

This screensaver is designed to run on PCs with processors 486 and above.
It requires at least 256 colours; if the screen mode has more colours than
this, the image quality improves (but the screensaver speed may slow down
slightly).

TROUBLESHOOTING

When you install the Newcastle Brown Ale screensaver, the options default
to values that ensure a decent performance. If you have problems, check
them off the following list:

PROBLEM: The screensaver runs too slowly.
SOLUTION: Make sure that the full screen mode toggle box is OFF.
Make sure that the Update Delay parameter is low (like zero).
Try reducing the maximum amount of balls parameter if it is
          high (e.g. 15-30).
Be aware that if you are running something in the background,
such as file transfer, the screensaver will not run as fast
          as it normally would.
PROBLEM: The colours on the screen look wrong.
SOLUTION: The screensaver is designed to work in screen modes with 256
colours or greater. If you are running it in 16 colour mode this
may be the source of the problem. Otherwise, please report
any bugs to communicata (see the web site at
          http://www.broonale.co.uk).
