The Eighth (The Playground Punk Jubilee Street Party-1)

This one was probably the most fun for me as it was completely different from what we usually have to do.

The day before the gig Tim tells us Oh yeah, were playing at a jubilee street party tomorrow. Adam is in Wales somewhere with his girlfriend, so Tim has to play the drums for this party.

In honour of the queen, we decide to learn three sex pistols classics: Anarchy In the UK, Pretty Vacant, and of course the REAL national anthem God Save The Queen, with me on taking on Johnny Rottens role as lead vocalist and surprisingly achieving it with some style.

The gig took place on the Sunday of the Jubilee weekend and was organised by Tims sister, whos a big pistols fan. We decided, wrongly, not to make a set-list and just play whatever we felt like, which worked until we forgot what we could play.

We set up our gear on and amongst cool playground items such as slides and tunnels, as the party was being held in a sort of local park. Its the coolest set weve had so far.

We started off playing to about 3 or 4 kids on the other side of the playground fence, we played Anarchy and Pretty Vacant and then stopped as more people were expected to arrive.
We went back on again and played to a crowd of about 15 or so kids and the adults sat down but they were into the pistols numbers. The old guys sat at the back and looked pissed off and wondered why the hell wed play the sex pistols on the jubilee.

We achieved our goal of the night: to excite the crowd of punk fans and piss off the old wrinklys wanting to hear covers of shitty pop numbers.

Our second inning lasted for about an hour as we asked the kids for requests, forgetting the songs we actually knew. The pistols fans cried out for Clash and Doors numbers but we dont know any, we played a lot of Blink as usual, The Offspring, Nirvana, Jimmy Eat World, Millencolin, and our own songs.

We ate some food then went back on at about nine for a final set which ended around quarter-to ten with Territorial Pissings then Tourettes. The crowd cheered and Tims sister came over and gave the band two crates of beer and myself a large bottle of vodka kick, as I cant stand beer, as payment for the show, then we went back to Tims and stayed up all night drinking and watching weird movies. The whole experience was damn good fun.
