Wonders of the world
Ancient people gave this name to some of the most beautiful works of art & buildings. There were seven of these.Six of them have now disappeared, but there is still one left, the Great Pyramid of Egypt.
The other ancient wonders of the world were the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, the statue of Zeus, the lighthouse at Alexandria, the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus & the Colossus of Rhodes.
Great Pyramid-:The only surviving ancient wonder of the world, the Great Pyramid, can be found 15 kms to South west of Cairo. It was built about 4500 years ago by the Pharaoh Cheops. There are over 2 billion blocks of stone in the structure, each one weighing about 3 tonnes.According to records it took 30 years to build.Ten years were spent building the road to link the Pyramid & the river Nile, which was used to transport the stone.
Hanging Gardens-:The Hanging Gardens of Babylon were built by Nebuchadnezzar for his wife to remind her of the trees and flowers of Peresia.
It is said that she so disliked the flat area around Babylon that the king Nebuchadnezzar had the gardens made into terraces which formed a hill.Walls 7 metres thick were built around the gardens.
The water for the gardens was supplied by a system of buckets which were connected to a chain. This turned all the time bringing the water from below which then fell back through the gardens into the rivers.By using this method of watering it was possible to have flowers in bloom all the year.
The brightest light-:The only practical ancient wonder of the world was the huge lighthouse of Pharos at Alexendria, built around 250 Bc.Standing around 110 metres high ,its top was decorated with bronze. The god on top held a permanentaley lighted torch which was reflected by mirrors for over 5 kms.Legend has it that the lighthouse was taken down stone by stone when it was said that there was a beautiful treasure buried underneath. As this was happening the huge mirror fell and was broken. In the 14th century an earthquake shook the remains of the tower and tossed it into the sea.
Eiffel Tower-: a wrought-iron structure designed by Alexandre Gustave Eiffel (1832-1923) and erected in Paris for the centenary exhibition of 1889. Still a famous landmark though at first greatly disliked, it was, with a height of 300 m. (984 ft.), the tallest man-made structure for many years.
