This roof problem started innocently enough.  The home owner, John Lanoue noticed a slow drip about 5 years ago, but never any more than a little water after each storm, no cause for concern right?  During his July vacation, a nasty storm blew off 4 or 5 shingles.  Unbeknownst to him, serious damage to his home was taking place.  Here's a photo of the small hole and the missing shingles.
Once the interior roof started taking on water, mold took hold fairly quickly.  Here's a shot of the roof in the walk in closet.
The structural integrity of the underlying plywood had been seriously comprimised by the slow drip, so much so that the rotted plywood crumbled to the touch.  The original problem was caused by what appeared to be a small indent in the general vicinity of the roof air vent which hadn't been properly flashed, the combination could properly be categorized as a minor disaster.  The job started at 7:30am on Monday, July 28th.  It didn't take much for Steve to remove the rotted roofing.
By 9:00am Steve had the primary failed sheet of plywood and shingles removed.  Unfortunately this wasn't quite enough as the sheet of plywood right below the offending piece also had small amounts of rot.  Steve cut out that section via reciprocating saw, it was about 24"x32".
Around 10:30am Steve had the first replacement sheet on the roof and was already getting to work with his favorite toy, his pneumatic nail gun.  John decided to take his chances with mold removal and took out the ceiling in the walk in closet and the master bathroom.
By noontime the roof had been completely repaired with all new shingles put in place.  John had completely removed all the water damaged ceiling and the cleanup for the job had started.
While Steve and John were cleaning up the remnants of the repair, 5 hours after the job had started, they noticed what appeared to be foam coming out from underneath the siding on the east wall of the house.  Upon closer inspection it was found to not be foam at all, but rather mold.  The water that had poured into the house from the roof had not only destroyed the ceiling in the bathroom and closet, the flooring in the closet, the ceiling in the kitchen, but the water had seeped into the vertical walls and had produced a breeding ground for mold.  Looks like a job for another day, but not too big a job for Punch List Pros NE.
