| THE ORIGINS OF PUMPUM |
The word pumpum came with our African heritage to the shores of Jamaica and is now a part of our local dialect 'patois' or, as we prefer to say, our Jamaican language. Pumpum means that part of the female anatomy that is most treasured by us women, the vagina. However, it has been thought of as a derogatory slang word associated with the lower echelons of society. We seek, through artistic expression, to change this narrow minded outlook by embracing the beauty and importance of Pumpum and hope to generate a renewed respect and honour for our women and people through self love, self worth and self empowerment. "What is it that has the power To open and bloom Creation's flower Pure and precious and prepared to be The vessel of fertility The entrance to the hidden key The mystery of humanity It is Pumpum" (c) SAJOYA |
