I've spent a lot of time discovering the tree pose lately. I love feeling as rooted as a redwood one moment and totally falling over the next.

Yoga Pose of the Issue

The Tree

1. Stand with feet shoulder width apart.

2. Place the left foot on the inside of the right thigh. The left knee should be pointing out to the left. The right leg is straight.

3. Place hands, palm together, in front of the chest.

4. Slowly, on an inhale, bring hands above head and point them, still palms together, at the ceiling. Try to open the hips. Feel as though you are being stretched between your hands pulling up and your foot pushing firmly into the ground. Hold.

5. On an exhale bring hands back down and place left foot back on the ground.

6. Repeat on the other side.

The Modified Tree

1. Stand with both feet shoulder width apart.

2. Take the left foot in the right hand and pull it up to the point where the right hip joint is. The left knee should point out to the left. The right leg is straight.

3. On an inhale straighten the left arm over the head, palm facing right. Again open the hips and feel the stretch. Hold.

4. On an exhale let the left arm and leg down.

5. Repeat on the other side.

The tree pose improves balance and concentration. While in the pose visualize roots growing from your foot into the ground, your hands feel the wind. To make the tree pose easier place the raised foot lower on the straight leg and/or leave hands in front of the chest instead of raising them.
