Winter's Grace

© November 4, 1998
Awake in the early morning,
With world quiet as could be,
Here 'neath snow's white blanket—
First in many years that I see.

Peace, quiet, and solitude
Wrap around the earth;
Stillness — unspoiled smoothness—
As the city awaits its rebirth.

White fairy dust 'tis settled
Gilding the branches' edges,
Coating each remaining leaf
Of all the trees and hedges.

Winter's first appearance
This year, did I see...
It chills my fingers — but,
Warms my heart with glee!

Amazement in its wonder,
At its beauty and purity...
What's Nature's holy water?
First snowfall, it must be!
