Winter's Approach

© October 19, 1998
Though clear, turquoise sky over me be
Wind whips along, setting leaves free.
Fall goes by, no longer quiet and slow;
Now pulling Winter's cold closely in tow.

Scarlets, golds, and browns swarming the horizon
Summer's over and Autumn's dance has well-begun.
The crunching sound of leaves, the cold taken root,
Mild weather fades under the stomp of Winter's boot.

The trees' brown branches scratching at the sky,
They pull and they twist as birds southward fly,
Prove that it won't be long now, not long indeed,
Until Autumn's grip gives way and Winter is freed.
