Speaking Out

also known as "The Candlelighting Poem"
© September 16, 1998
Standing tall,
Standing proud,
Standing free,
Facing the crowd,

Sharing my poem,
Sharing my hope,
Even my desperation
As I learned to cope.

Providing inspiration,
Giving back some aid,
Drawing a roadmap
Of the progress made.

Light under a bushel
Shines, but cannot guide;
I'm lighting the path
Instead of trying to hide.

Openly honest,
Painfully blunt,
But there for a reason
— Not as a stunt.

October 7, 1998: Candlelighting CeremonySpeaking out and
Breaking the silence;
I refuse to hide
Because of the violence.

Silent shame hurts
Like living it again...
So I WON'T be broken
Or stop moving my pen.

Saying my piece
Without guilt and shame,
Not letting others shift it
Into something lame.

Writing it my way —
Let others tell their own side —
My journal is mine,
My place to confide.

All my hopes and fears,
My plans and my dreams,
Shouldn't fall prey to concerns
About the way it seems...
