| Rusalky |
| The rusalky of Russia inhabited the rivers and lakes of the land. They remained in their water element for the most part. Once in awhile, a rusalky would fall in love with the charms of a motal man. At least one rusalky left her watery home and married a human. There was only one promise the man had to agree to: he must never be unfaithful. The rusalky and her mortal lover lived in happiness for a time, but as mortals do, the man eventually betrayed her. The rusalky, heartbroken, returned to her lake. The man, realizing his mistake, sought her out and pleaded for her to come back. She could not; she was bound to remain a water creature forever. The man professed his love for her and moved to embrace her. She warned him to stop: the touch of a rusalky brought only death. Ignoring her pleas, the man gathered his love into his arms, kissed her, and died. The rusalky was then destined to mourn her lover for all eternity. |
