Manticore Project is housed in a genetics lab in Gillette, Wyoming. The scientists there were using recombinant DNA to create an advanced infantry soldier. They recruited young women for the project who were kept on base, monitored, and given (among other things) vitamins and gene therapy. The children were born in Vivadyne Labs. Max's mother was the only woman known to try to escape with child. They had to put her under during delivery and she was sent to a mental hospital after the birth.
Tac-Leaders, Instructors and medical personnel were on the base to monitor the training and growth of the children. The children's primary instruction was in military tactics.
The barcode on the kids necks is etched into their genetic code and even if it is removed, it will return within a few weeks.
X-5 was genetically engineered using feline DNA. This gives them:
� Enhanced strength, speed and agility
� Telescopic and night vision
� Hyper-sensitive hearing
� Superior mental processing skills
� Catlike reflexes/dexterity
� Strong lung capacity (can hold her breath for 4+ minutes)
ALSO
� extended sleep patterns (they don't require much sleep)
� Females going into heat 2 or 3 times a year. Mating rituals of males unknown at this time.
Blond Boy: name & numbers unknown (deceased X5) - After having a serious seizure, he was dragged from the barracks. Max later witnessed him being dissected on a table.
Eva: numbers unknown(deceased X5) - was shot and killed by Lydecker.
Twelve kids escaped from project Manticore in 2009. At least 3 were wounded and two killed during the escape. Hannah Sukova, who worked for Manticore, rescued Max from the road the night of the escape. Max later ran away from Hannah. Also, in 2009 an electromagnetic pulse unleashed by terrorists wiped out most data along the west coast, leaving the US in the same state as a 3rd world country---this somewhat impaired Manticore's ability to recapture the escapees.
Hannah Sukova was briefly reunited with Max on Sedro Island in 2020. Max rescued her from Lydecker's wrath.
There may be other treatments, but Tryptophan seems to be the popular drug among X-5 escapees to control their seizures. They will becomes weak and feverish without it. And if the seizures get bad enough, they could die. Tryptophan is converted by the body into Serotonin (which the Manticore kids lack). If Tryptophan is unavailable, milk will help stabilize the Serotonin levels in her brain.
4 of the X-5 group (Brin the only known escapee) developed a form of Werner's Syndrom. The Manticore doctors have a treatment for it.
