down with love

Down With Love (20th Century Fox)

Starring: Ewan Mcgregor, Rene Zellweger, Sarah Palson, Rachel Dratch, David Hyde Pierce

Battle of the Sexes. The battle that had never ended ever since Eve took a bite on that stupid apple in the Garden of Eden. The movie down with love star Ewan Mcgregor (Moulin Rouge) as the devious, charming and womanizing bachelor Chase-works as a, semi-freelance writer for KNOW Magazine, the magazine for "Men in the Know" whose editor happens to be his best friend. Meanwhile, Renee Zellwegger's (Bridget Jones' Diary, Chicago) character is the writer of the book "Down with Love" which catapulted her character to stardom because women started using her book as a bible in everything that women do that concerns men. In short, it's a chic/bitch-ass book about girl power (long live ginger spice!! :p). In the book, Renee wrote that women should treat men like how men treat women.. "ala Carte"! Watch the movie for further explanations.. hehe... Renee's character is accompanied with her publisher who happened to be the love interest of Catcher's bestfrriend and together, they plan to conquer the male dominated city of New York. The movie is set in the late 60's with its vintage/retro/art setting that managed to be chic and fun as well, kinda like watching an Austin Powers movie without the shagadellic guy of course. The movie was full of clich's about the "sacred" battle and I don't want to sound like some bitchy critic, but the concept of the movie is a bit too shallow, not to mention unoriginal. It's like you know that Ewan's character Chaste would eventually fall in love with Rene's character and even though the whole climax of the film focused on the twist that Renee's character would pull at the latter part of the movie, you still know that Ewan would win her back. This movie is actually a follow up to the musicals that the lead actors played a year or two ago so expect to see some dancing and singing not to mention some major cheesy music. Don't expect too much though, because the movie more or less focused on the acting skills of both Mcgregor and Zellweger. One thing that I noticed is that, they didn't only use vintage sets, they also applied it to the special effects, lighting, cinematography, acting, etc., I mean I'm talking about a real retro movie from start to credits. The director's formula for the movie is actually refreshing to see because of all the multi-gajillion movies that comes out with real high-high tech digital thingimajigs that producers use, you don't even get to see the real actors do their own thing anymore, but in this film, you'll get blown away by both the actors chemistry not to mention the versatility of Mr. Ewan Mcgregor. All in all, its worth to see Down with Love as a movie with a different perspective in movie-making and if you're planning to see it, don't forget to take your gal with yah..

finding nemo

Finding Nemo (Pixar)

Starring: featuring the voices of Albert Brookes, Ellen DeGeneres, Willem Dafoe, Geoffrey Rush, Allison Janney, Brad Garrett, Barry Humpries and Alexander Gould

Had a chat with your daddy lately? Watch this movie and you'd sure want to give your old man a hug. The story is about an overprotective father who happens to be a clown fish that has no sense of humor and hisson, Nemo. Nemo didn't actually got lost or anythong he was actually caught by a dentist and had him put in an aquarium, here Nemo metagroup of fishes who also planned for Nemo to escape and meet up with his father. Meanwhile Marlon, the clown fish sets off to follow his lost son, with the aide of Dory, a fish suffering from short term memory loss. together they set off to an adventure to find Nemo. It's another hilarious comedy from Pixar and i can bet my bubbly bottom (hehe..) that there will be a sequel to this said movie. The dialogues where all witty, sarcastic and sometimes just plain silly that you can't help but laugh out from your seats. It's definetly worth it to watch.

ewan mcgregor

Bangkok Haunted (Pioneer)

Starring: Pimsiree Pimsee, Pete Thong Jeur Director: Oxide Pang Chun, Danny Pang

Love, gore, suspense. This three elements can certainly in making an art a good horror flick. Shake Rattle and Roll-ish, the movie is divided into three different stories. Urban Legends are the main topic of these stories and its all focused on the city of Bangkok, hence the title. The story starts in a bar somewhere in Bangkok where three girls where chatting about urban legends concerning the said city. Jieb, owner of an antique shop, starts to talk about a 70 year old drum that is haunting her while Pan, is a single woman who is desperately finding true love and finds a solution in a potion given to her by a neighbor and lastly, Nop, a policeman who finds a dead body (the narrator) and struggles to solve the mystery surrounding her death. The stories in itself had good twists. It was a good horror flick because it not only contained frightening and disturbing scenes it actually had a good storyline. It's a good film to watch because its scary and smart so it's definitely a must see, plus hey! it's asian!!

Dark Water (Solar Films)

Starring: Hitomi Kuroki, Rio Kanno, Mirei Oguchi, Asami Mizukawa Director: Nakata Hideo

The story depicts a forlorn mother and her child suffering through a divorce whereas the mother struggles for the custody of her daughter at the same time, has find a job and a decent home where they can live. She stumbles upon an old apartment building and a day care center where they unknowingly captured a ghosts' attention. A little girl named Mitsuko went missing 6 months ago and she was last seen in the old building. In the movie, Mitsuko's ghost starts to torment the life of both mother and daughter they must find a way to stay alive and keep themselves from drowning in the dark water. This is not your typical horror movie and we have to give credit to the director because he was the one who gave us the pretty cool movie Ringu. He gave the movie more depth because of how he touched family issues and tried to connect it with the ghosts' "unfinished business". All in all it's a pretty cool movie, don't expect to be blown away by the ending though because it's not what i expected and i personally think there should have been a better ending than that.
