Battle of the Sexes. The battle that had never ended ever since Eve took a bite on that stupid apple in the Garden of Eden. The movie down with love star Ewan Mcgregor (Moulin Rouge) as the devious, charming and womanizing bachelor Chase-works as a, semi-freelance writer for KNOW Magazine, the magazine for "Men in the Know" whose editor happens to be his best friend. Meanwhile, Renee Zellwegger's (Bridget Jones' Diary, Chicago) character is the writer of the book "Down with Love" which catapulted her character to stardom because women started using her book as a bible in everything that women do that concerns men. In short, it's a chic/bitch-ass book about girl power (long live ginger spice!! :p). In the book, Renee wrote that women should treat men like how men treat women.. "ala Carte"! Watch the movie for further explanations.. hehe... Renee's character is accompanied with her publisher who happened to be the love interest of Catcher's bestfrriend and together, they plan to conquer the male dominated city of New York.
The movie is set in the late 60's with its vintage/retro/art setting that managed to be chic and fun as well, kinda like watching an Austin Powers movie without the shagadellic guy of course. The movie was full of clich's about the "sacred" battle and I don't want to sound like some bitchy critic, but the concept of the movie is a bit too shallow, not to mention unoriginal. It's like you know that Ewan's character Chaste would eventually fall in love with Rene's character and even though the whole climax of the film focused on the twist that Renee's character would pull at the latter part of the movie, you still know that Ewan would win her back. This movie is actually a follow up to the musicals that the lead actors played a year or two ago so expect to see some dancing and singing not to mention some major cheesy music. Don't expect too much though, because the movie more or less focused on the acting skills of both Mcgregor and Zellweger. One thing that I noticed is that, they didn't only use vintage sets, they also applied it to the special effects, lighting, cinematography, acting, etc., I mean I'm talking about a real retro movie from start to credits. The director's formula for the movie is actually refreshing to see because of all the multi-gajillion movies that comes out with real high-high tech digital thingimajigs that producers use, you don't even get to see the real actors do their own thing anymore, but in this film, you'll get blown away by both the actors chemistry not to mention the versatility of Mr. Ewan Mcgregor. All in all, its worth to see Down with Love as a movie with a different perspective in movie-making and if you're planning to see it, don't forget to take your gal with yah..
