CIUDAD JUAREZ
In 1993, young women began disappearing from the border town of Ciudad Juarez, Mexico.  Soon their  bodies were discovered in the desert; the canals of the city; and in dumpsters.
Many of the women worked in the maquiladoras - foreign owned factories - that populated the industrial parks of the city.
In a six year period, nearly 200 women were murdered in Ciudad Juarez.  During this time, Esther Chavez Cano,  a former accountant for Kraft Foods, began noticing brief news accounts concerning the deaths and disappearances in the daily press -- usually "buried" in the back of the papers.  That is when she wrote an editorial demanding an end to the brutalization which was passing unchallenged.
At first, authorities thought the murders were "gang related."  Then, they arrested an Egyptian man, previously convicted of rape in the United States; but the murders continued. The victim's families build shrines in police stations as reminders of the missing. Many theories and rumors circulated about the murders; however, in this production Pulling Threads will explore the question of "Why are these women being murdered?"
