| In 1993, young women began disappearing from the border town of Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. Soon their bodies were discovered in the desert; the canals of the city; and in dumpsters. |

| Many of the women worked in the maquiladoras - foreign owned factories - that populated the industrial parks of the city. |

| In a six year period, nearly 200 women were murdered in Ciudad Juarez. During this time, Esther Chavez Cano, a former accountant for Kraft Foods, began noticing brief news accounts concerning the deaths and disappearances in the daily press -- usually "buried" in the back of the papers. That is when she wrote an editorial demanding an end to the brutalization which was passing unchallenged. |

| At first, authorities thought the murders were "gang related." Then, they arrested an Egyptian man, previously convicted of rape in the United States; but the murders continued. The victim's families build shrines in police stations as reminders of the missing. Many theories and rumors circulated about the murders; however, in this production Pulling Threads will explore the question of "Why are these women being murdered?" |
