This is Kathy or as I like to call her, Missy. Missy and I have known each other since 1996 when we worked together at Outpost.com. Our desks used to be situated next to each other and amid the insanity of working for a start-up.com, this led to daily ripping apart of each other - - - all in good fun of course. Missy became pregnant shortly after she was hired at Outpost. We had a lot of fun trying to guess the name and sex of the baby. At one point, we had a bulletin board of suggested names that we could call the little one. Given that Missy's last name is Lamb, some of the suggestions were, Mary Had a Little, Legga, and Jambalaya Lamb. A few months later, while Missy was in the hospital about to give birth, I was delegated by the work crew to call the hospital and check on her progress. Little did I know when I called, the nurse would put me through to her room while she was in the middle of hard labor. I'll never hear the end of that one or forget Missy telling me, "I'm kinda busy right now Missy, can I call ya back!?". The next day, we found out that Missy had a 10 pound baby girl and named her Shayla Marie Lamb.
Btw, she calls me Missy too. The Missy thing started by getting on each other's nerves during the day and we started saying it sarcastically. "Miss snotty pants", and "don't Lippy with me" were other fond phrases we would use...and still do sometimes. People at work would sometimes confuse us because we are both short, blonde, and have BIG ATTITUDES.
In Missy, I found a friend whose ego and chip on her shoulder rivaled my own. Soon, the friendly banter grew into a lasting friendship that has continued on long after the internet gold rush ever did.....While I did not walk away from that company with a lot of stock options or as a millionaire, I did walk away with some true friends who have enriched my life - Missy is one of them.
I left the company in December 2000 and they threw me a going away party. Missy was the only one (besides me) who drank enough to be sick all night - now that is real love and friendship! While Missy's schedule is very busy these days with working full time, pursuing a degree in computer science, and being a mother to Shayla, we still make time to get together for girls night out which usually include dinner and a movie or lunch and a matinee.
