Duped

How do you miss one who no longer exists?
No, its not the dead of whom she mourns
But of the living
Who alter their beings into unrecognizable souls
Where once there was patience, now a short temper
Once compassion, now a cold heart
Once kindness, now misdirected anger
Anger at himself
But he makes her the scapegoat
He is unhappy inside
But believes she made him unhappy
Its easier for him to think it,
So she goes along with the charade
One last selfless-sacrifice for a
Once caring friend,
Integrated so fully into her life,
Now refuses meetings and calls.
Too busy he says, lame excuses
When she initiates contact, its more coldness
No sign of concern or caring
He does not ask her, how are you doing?
How is your life? How do you like your job?
By doing it he would be asking
Her to share, something he cannot reciprocate
Why not??
The ever-unknowing question.
Because he is getting laid?
Because he is still empty inside?
Because its his twisted way of FINALLY deciding to stop leading her on?
The heart has the memory of an elephant she surmises
The silent king is unable to share
And therefore care
This inability or unwillingness
Has left her to assume so many un-knowns
That he was really this monster all along
And loves blinders had kept her from seeing the truth
Pretentious boy had even himself fooled into the role
Of caring, friend, lover, sharing companion
Duped into loving a fantasy
Not a tangible player
Hatred and anger, love and grief
Are the awards of merit
His performance gained
And confusion
Of whether that person
Did ever exist
Somewhere besides the elephant grave and her mind
Now she finds it better to not talk at all
For the coldness on display
Is a tragic reminder of
The false metamorphosis
Of emotional impotence
Of a time and being
That exist no more.
