My Osteoporosis Story

Marsha's homegrown petunia I first learned I had osteoporosis at the age of 42. I went to the chiropractor and she made an adjustment to my spine that felt as if she had broken my rib. Because of the pain, I went to my medical doctor who ordered an x-ray. The x-ray did not show a broken rib, but it did show that I had had a broken rib in the past that healed. I had had a painful episode with my ribs a few months earlier after caughing too hard. As a result of the x-rays, my doctor decided to order a bone mineral density test (BMD). The results came back and showed I had severe osteoporosis in the hip and osteopenia in the spine. My hip T-score was 3.00. My doctor immediatly started me on Fosomax and instructed me to take more calcium and get out and exercise.

I was a physical therapy patient for neck and shoulder pain, so my physical therapist gave me instructions on exercises to do and got me started on those as well as a walking program.

About a week into taking Fosomax, I began to experience extreme leg cramps and muscle spasms in my legs at night. Before long the pain in my feet and legs became so severe I abandoned my walking program and could only stand to work in the kitchen on my feet for about 15 minutes at a time before I would have to sit down to rest. I began to have pain from head to toe and my physical therapist could not understand why I always felt like a truck had run over me. He thought I was doing things at home to cause this. About a month after all of this started I went back to my doctor and complained and asked if this could be a side effet of Fosomax. The PDR indicated that muscle spasms and pain were a possible side effect. I stopped taking the drug and about three weeks later I was back to my walking and feeling much better. I since learned that Fosomax lowers the amount of calcium circulating in the blood, thus depriving the rest of your body of the calcium it needs and that is why I had all the spasms and body pain.

After that experience, I studied out the other drugs that are similar to Fosomax and learned that they do the same thing. I determined that I would not use drugs for bone loss. That year I began walking 5 to 6 days a week 30 to 40 minutes a day. I also took extra calcium and magnesium supplements. That following year my bone density test showed a significant improvement! I continued to show improvement two years in a row, but then my dog bumped my ankle and fractured it. I was knocked out of my walking for close to three months. That set me back.

It has been a struggle since then to gain bone density. Ive had two different episodes of tendonitis that has kept me from walking for periods of time. The last BMD test I had showed that I had lost bone density, however, I am still not back to where I began, so I have that to be thankful for.

I am back to daily walking, although not as long as I used to walk. I still struggle with tendonitis if I do too much. I am gardening and hopeful that will help strengthen the bones in my spine. I am taking daily Calcium Citrate Plus Magnesium supplements as well as other daily vitamins to be assured that my body is getting what it needs to build strong bones.

I do what I can and leave the rest in Gods hands. Worry will only weaken the bones. The Bible says, A merry heart doeth good [like] a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones. (Proverbs 17:22)
