ACTIONS—Described prior to observation
Goals and Objectives-
By the end of this unit students will understand and be able to write a proficient personal narrative.
Connections-
KY new teacher standards
Context-
We have been reading The Giver. War. Instead of reading the text and having quizzes and tests, I want my students to write personal narratives and conduct discussions. The students will also create a collage of hand-drawn pictures that will later be scanned on to a computer and put into a book that will be posted on my website. There will also be a hard copy of the book that will be found in the classroom.
Resources-
I used sparknotes.com for the quiz.
Procedures-
· From April 26th through May 5th students will be reading the book and discussing it.
· May 6, students will go to the computer lab to complete an online quiz of the book. The students will then have to write down their answers on a separate piece of paper in to me to be graded.
· May 7, students will lead an in depth discussion about the book. Stating things that they liked and disliked about it, and whether or not any future students should read this book. Students will also discuss how important it is to be able to remember things that you experience throughout your life. The class will then be instructed to brainstorm for a personal narrative that they will have to begin working on for homework.
Homework:
o Begin working on your personal narrative. Have a rough draft ready for Monday.
· May 10, students will trade their papers with each other and edit and review them. Making comments on a separate sheet of paper to be given to the author after turning it in for a grade.
· May 11, Students will receive their comments that were made on their papers back.
Homework:
o Students will take their comments papers home and correct any advised changes, to be turned in on Wednesday.
· May 12, Students will turn in a copy of their paper for me to look over and edit their grammar and punctuation.
· May 13, I will hand back students narratives.
Homework:
o Students will correct their stories and turn in a final copy on Friday.
· May 14, the students will read their stories aloud to the class. Students will then turn in their stories to be graded
