| Saskatchewan has a long history in Junior hockey. The SJHL was the dominant league of Western Canada in the 1960's. The original SJHL formed the basis of the CMJHL (now
WHL). In 1968, a new SJHL was created. It was primarily made up of teams that opted out of the new WCHL (formerly CMJHL) due to the league's rebel status. The Regina Pats being the most notable of the charter teams. The league competed for the Memorial Cup. In 1970, the WCHL settled its differences with the CAHA and became the lone Western league to compete for the Memorial Cup. The SJHL continued on as part of the new Tier II Junior 'A' level where it remains today. |
