| The QMJHL was formed in 1969 when the Provincial Junior League and the Montreal Metro Junior leagues merged. The new league quickly gained acceptance and after a couple of seasons, was one of only three leagues competing for the Memorial Cup. While the league primarily a Quebec league, it has had teams in Ontario and New York State.
