
| The IHL was formed in 1945 and started out as a small league in the Detroit-Windsor area. It gradually expanded and became a prominent Senior league. In time, the league turned pro and gained some NHL sponsorship. In the 1990's, it grew rapidly and became a North American wide league. At it's peak, many of the owners were making plans to evolve the league into a rival to the NHL. Quite an evolution for a league with such humble beginnings. It has since pulled back a bit and is now in some trouble to establish a lasting identity.
