MAMA’S FAMILY…

Television Sitcom: 1982-1990

This situation comedy series first aired on NBC (first two seasons), then in first-run syndication from 1982 to 1990.

It was about the Harper family of Raytown, a small town somewhere in the Southern U.S.  Mama (Thelma) Harper was the matriarch.  Her children were Ellen, Eunice and Vint.  Vint and his second wife Naomi lived in Mama’s basement.  Early on in the show, Vint’s kids from his first marriage, Buzz and Sonja, lived in the house also.  Later on, Mama’s grandson, Bubba Higgins (Eunice’s son), moved in after leaving Reform school.  Mama’s neighbour, Iola Boyland, was also added as a recurring role in later years.

Some 130 episodes aired over the years.  I grew up watching the new shows in the late 1980s, as well as the older re-runs – all shown on WXON-TV Channel 20 in Detroit, MI (now WB20 – WDWB-TV).  Today the show still re-runs on many local stations, cable classic TV channels, and perhaps most well-known on cable-TV’s TBS Superstation.

Several other Mama’s Family-related sites have appeared on the web, such as:

(1) Mama’s Family on TBS Superstation – information on air dates/times/episodes

(2) Matt Freier’s Mama’s Family Fan Site – lots of good information, well laid out – (but somewhat out of date!)

(3) Javed’s Mama’s Family Site – includes quotes, transcripts, cast information, “all about Raytown”

(4) Mama’s Family on “TV Tome” – includes info on episodes plus “flubs”

Here is a master list of all 130 episodes and their topics.
