HOME CHURCH MOSAICS

St Philip Neri, Liverpool

The Church of St Philip Neri in Catherine Street, Liverpool is currently the location of the Chaplaincy for Liverpool John Moores University and Liverpool University.

In the vestibule over the doorway to the main church is a mosaic showing St Philip Neri offering help to a young girl who is obviously poor. This is a reference to the lay brotherhood that St Philip Neri founded in Rome which was called the Oratorians. The brotherhood was devoted to charitable work.

Also in the vestibule are images of the Virgin, kneeling in prayer and Christ carrying the cross.

The mosaic ceiling in the entrance to St Philip Neri was never completed.  Many of the tesserae still have the backing paper on, which bears the name 'T. J Harris of Liverpool'.

On either side of the aisle are mosaics depicting 30 saints, plus highly decorated panels and borders. These mosaics appear to be in good condition but unfortunately, at some point in their history, electric lights have been attached to the walls which will have resulted in some damage to the tesserae beneath.
