Halfway up the main
staircase of the Seaman's Mission is this large mosaic of the Virgin
and Child. The Virgin is depicted as 'Stella Maris' - the Star
of the Sea, as symbolised by the stars around her head. The crescent moon beneath the
feet of the Virgin is a symbol of chastity. Christ is holding a ship which symbolises protection
for sailors.
This mosaic was originally made for the Seaman's Mission in Hardman Street, Liverpool by Portuguese mosaicists.
