Queensway Tunnel, Liverpool

The Queensway Tunnel was officially opened on the 18th July 1934 by King George V and Queen Mary.  It is a road tunnel which travels under the River Mersey and links the City of Liverpool to Birkenhead.

This tile mosaic was designed to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the opening of the tunnel.  It is located at the main Liverpool entrance, opposite St John's Garden.  The lettering around the mosaic reads 'MAP OF QUEENSWAY TUNNEL CONSTRUCTED UNDER THE CONTROL OF THE MERSEY TUNNEL JOINT COMMITTEE. WORK COMMENCED IN 1925 AND WAS COMPLETED IN 1934.'
