HOME CHURCH MOSAICS

Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King, Liverpool

The Catholic Cathedral in Liverpool contains many works of art including sculptures in bronze, stone & wood, embroidered wall hangings and paintings.

In the Pentecost Chapel is a large mosaic by George Mayer Marton (1897-1960) which was originally made for the Church of the Holy Ghost in Ford, Liverpool. This church was demolished but the mosaic was saved and installed in the Cathedral in 1988.  Born in Hungary, Mayer Marton was a tutor at the Liverpool College of Art in Hope Street, Liverpool.

This mosaic depicts Mary and the Apostles reaching up to the Holy Spirit which is represented by the white dove at the top.  The red flames are a symbol of religious ardour.
