Castle Street, Liverpool
This six storey office building was built at 3-5 Castle Street in 1839. It was designed by a firm of architects called Grayson & Ould for the British and Foreign Marine Insurance Company. Above the first floor windows is a mosaic frieze, created using vitreous glass tesserae, which depicts sailing ships and sea creatures. The central panel contains a banner bearing the company's name and two sails - one with the flag of St George and the other a Liver Bird. The name of the mosaicist who created this frieze is unknown. |
The frieze is quite damaged with many of the tesserae missing - particularly in the background of the left panel. |
Central panel depicting two sails with a Liver Bird on the left and the flag of St George on the right. The company name appears on the banner. |
Left panel depicting an ocean liner and sailing ships - the sunset background has many tesserae missing.
|
Right panel depicting sailing ships - again most of the damage appears to be in the background.
|
Sea creature decoration around the left bay window - possibly dolphins as they are similar in design to the 2nd century Dolphin Mosaic from Delos. |
