2004 Internship con't
All the maps were finished in the middle of July and the Health Commissioner suggested my innovative maps should be published and perhaps presented. So, the data evaluation specialist and I selected the top 15 maps and began working on the publishing. To make a long story short, I wrote the introduction and ranked each disease in the 88 counties and she put the draft together. Currently, we are awaiting approval from the Health Commissoner, who will proof it and give us the go-ahead. Here is a sample map of shigellosis.

Now it is the beginning of August and my time here is winding down. The historical data project was finished on July 30, which was delayed due to us requesting data from ODH. Sometimes it takes weeks before your e-mail is acknowledged and because I am just an intern, the delay can be longer. In little over a week, I will be moving to Toledo to work on my Master's and hopefully begin working at the Toledo-Lucas County Health Department. While was was here, the Health Commissioner, a former employee of the Toledo-Lucas County Health Department, put in a good word for me up there and found out a full-time Epidemiologist I position is open. So, I told him to put my name in the hat and I sent my resume in. I will be interviewing on August 9th and I am keeping my finger crossed.

UPDATE 10/23:

I didn't get the position as another candidate (from Michigan with an MPH) was better prepared. Still, the deputy health commissioner said I was the next choice and I am proud of myself for handling myself professionally and impressioning the interviewers. The only problem with the whole ordeal was that I didn't get an answer from the Toledo-Lucas County Health Department until 6 weeks after the interview. It messed up my class schedule for the semester, so I had to go part-time this term. Now I just need a job to hold me over...
