Down with the World

"Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there you heart will be also." Matthew 6:19-21

"So do not worry, saying 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek ye first his kingdom and righteousness, and all these things shall be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." Matthew 6:31-34

Yeah, the lyrics may be a bit cheesy, but they were what I was feeling at the time. It's hard to get something better than what you feel at that particular moment in time, and so the song stuck. Anyway, even if a lot of the song doesn't apply to a bunch of poor punk kids, the message is still applicable to plenty of other things. So many people worry about money; I know I do, and yeah, it's tough to fully rely on God sometimes. When you have to trust something that you can't physically feel or see, it makes it plenty more difficult, but I guess that's where hardcore faith comes in. When we, the band, stand up on that stage or just practice the song, it's a good reminder to me that I shouldn't worry, and that God will provide. Though some people may be blessed (or cursed) with extravagant luxury items, life itself is much more valuable and beautiful than what can merely be added to it. Out of all of God's creation, this whole universe, he chooses to take care of us. That is a comforting thought.
Now, for the history of the song. Like many of our other songs, the feelings to write the song came from feelings towards our church. Our church was given to opportunity to rent out our unused facilities to a private school, which meant that we would have a bunch of kids roaming around our church every weekday. "What a great opportunity to share the gospel to a large number of kids who wouldn't normally be found in a church!" we thought. The rest of the church thought otherwise. The church just had new carpet installed, and didn't want all the kids ruining their new carpet. What type of crap is that?!?! Anyway, the mere thought of them rejecting the school because of something so trivial as carpet stains angered and frustrated me. They would rather invest in something temporary like carpet instead of lives which could be changed for eternity if they were just given a chance. Fortunately, our church did end up renting the facilities to the school in the end.  Why waste an opportunity like that?  So I guess what it all boils down to is that we should really focus on God and His will, not on money, possessions, or even our future, because He will take care of it.
